    Reconstruction of cracks and material losses by perimeter-like penalizations and phase-field methods: numerical results

    We numerically implement the variational approach for reconstruction in the inverse crack and cavity problems developed by one of the authors. The method is based on a suitably adapted free-discontinuity problem. Its main features are the use of phase-field functions to describe the defects to be reconstructed and the use of perimeter-like penalizations to regularize the ill-posed problem. The numerical implementation is based on the solution of the corresponding optimality system by a gradient method. Numerical simulations are presented to show the validity of the method.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure

    Optimal control for the thermistor problem

    This paper is concerned with the state-constrained optimal control of the two-dimensional thermistor problem, a quasi-linear coupled system of a parabolic and elliptic PDE with mixed boundary conditions. This system models the heating of a conducting material by means of direct current. Existence, uniqueness and continuity for the state system are derived by employing maximal elliptic and parabolic regularity. By similar arguments the linearized state system is discussed, while the adjoint system involving measures is investigated using a duality argument. These results allow to derive first-order necessary conditions for the optimal control problem

    An approach to construct a three-dimensional isogeometric model from ”-CT scan data with an application to the bridge of a violin

    We present an algorithm to build a ready to use isogeometric model from scan data gained by a ”-CT scan. Based on a three-dimensional multi-patch reference geometry, which includes the major topological features, we fit the outline, then the cross-section and finally the three-dimensional geometry. The key step is to fit the outline, where a non-linear least squares problem is solved with a Gauss-Newton approach presented by Borges and Pastva (2002). We extend this approach by a regularisation and a precise interpolation of selected data points. The resulting NURBS geometry is ready for applying isogeometric analysis tools for efficient numerical simulations. As a particular example we examine the scan data of a violin bridge and present the complete workflow from the ”-CT scan up to the numerical simulation based on isogeometric mortar methods. We illustrate the relevance of the constructed geometry with a vibro-acoustical application

    Indications and Outcomes of Patients Receiving Therapeutic Plasma Exchange under Critical Care Conditions: A Retrospective Eleven-Year Single-Center Study at a Tertiary Care Center

    Background: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is frequently performed in critical care settings for heterogenous indications. However, specific intensive care unit (ICU) data regarding TPE indications, patient characteristics and technical details are sparse. Methods: We performed a retrospective, single-center study using data from January 2010 until August 2021 for patients treated with TPE in an ICU setting at the University Hospital Zurich. Data collected included patient characteristics and outcomes, ICU-specific parameters, as well as apheresis-specific technical parameters and complications. Results: We identified n = 105 patients receiving n = 408 TPEs for n = 24 indications during the study period. The most common was thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) (38%), transplant-associated complications (16.3%) and vasculitis (14%). One-third of indications (35.2%) could not be classified according to ASFA. Anaphylaxis was the most common TPE-related complication (6.7%), while bleeding complications were rare (1%). The median duration of ICU stay was 8 ± 14 days. Ventilator support, renal replacement therapy or vasopressors were required in 59 (56.2%), 26 (24.8%), and 35 (33.3%) patients, respectively, and 6 (5.7%) patients required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The overall hospital survival rate was 88.6%. Conclusion: Our study provides valuable real-world data on heterogenous TPE indications for patients in the ICU setting, potentially supporting decision-making
